You are standing in an airport, laptop open, twenty minutes until boarding. A little banner slides across your screen: "Unsecured network. Protect yourself with a VPN." Somewhere in the back of your mind, a voice you have heard in a hundred YouTube sponsor reads whispers that hackers are watching, that your data is naked, that one click will make you safe. So you wonder: do I actually need one of these things, or is this just fear with a monthly subscription attached?

It is a fair question, and the honest answer is more interesting than either the ads or the skeptics let on. A VPN is a genuinely useful tool for a few specific jobs. It is also wildly oversold for almost everything else. Knowing the difference is the whole game.

What a VPN actually does

Strip away the marketing and a VPN — a virtual private network — does something quite simple. It builds an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server run by the VPN company. Everything you send goes through that tunnel first, then out to the wider internet from the server's address instead of yours.

Two concrete things happen as a result. First, anyone sitting between you and the VPN server — the coffee shop's router, the airport network, your internet provider — sees only scrambled traffic heading to one server. The situations where it genuinely earns its keep

The strongest, least arguable case is untrusted networks you do not control. Public Wi-Fi at cafes, hotels, airports, and conference halls is shared with strangers, and you rarely know who set it up or who else is on it. A VPN means that even on a sketchy network, the people around you see encrypted noise instead of your activity. If you travel and work from random networks, this alone can justify the cost.

The second solid case is hiding your activity from your internet provider. In many countries your ISP can log the domains you visit and, in some places, sell or hand over that data. A VPN moves that visibility from your ISP to the VPN company — which only helps if you trust the VPN company more than your ISP, a point we will come back to. It can also sidestep an ISP that quietly throttles video or gaming traffic, since the provider can no longer tell what kind of traffic it is.

The third case is appearing to be somewhere else. This is the one people actually buy VPNs for: watching a streaming catalog from another country, reaching a service while traveling abroad, or checking how a website looks in a different region. It works often enough to be useful, though streaming platforms actively block known VPN servers, so it is a cat-and-mouse game rather than a guarantee.

Notice what these three have in common. They are all about who can see your connection and where you seem to be — exactly the two things the tunnel controls. When a use case lines up with the tool's actual mechanism, a VPN delivers.

The myths that refuse to die

Now for the oversell, because this is where money gets wasted and, worse, where people feel protected when they are not.

"A VPN makes you anonymous." It does not. It hides your IP address, but that is one thread in a very large web. The moment you log into your email, your bank, or any social account, the site knows exactly who you are — you just told it. On top of that, browser cookies and fingerprinting (the unique combination of your screen size, fonts, browser version, and settings) let advertisers recognize you across sites regardless of your IP. A VPN raises the floor on privacy; it does not make you invisible.

"A VPN protects me from hackers and viruses." This is the most dangerous myth because it breeds carelessness. A VPN encrypts your connection, not your judgment. If you click a phishing link and type your password into a fake login page, the VPN faithfully encrypts that mistake and delivers it straight to the scammer. It does nothing against malware you download, a weak password, or an account with no two-factor login. Those threats need different tools entirely.

Encrypting the road does not stop you from driving to the wrong address. A VPN secures the journey, not the destination or the decision.

"HTTPS already does this, so VPNs are pointless." Half true, and the half that is wrong matters. The padlock in your browser — HTTPS — does encrypt the contents of most web traffic, which is a huge deal and is why casual snooping on public Wi-Fi is far less scary than it was a decade ago. But HTTPS still reveals which sites you connect to, and not every app or connection uses it perfectly. A VPN covers that gap by hiding the destinations too. They are complementary, not redundant.

The part nobody in the ads mentions: trust

Here is the uncomfortable trade at the center of every VPN. You are not eliminating the party who can see your traffic — you are changing which party that is. Instead of your ISP or the local network, it becomes the VPN provider. Their server is the one point that sees your real IP on one side and your destinations on the other.

That makes the honesty of the company the entire product. A provider that quietly logs everything and sells it is worse than the ISP you were trying to escape. This is why serious buyers look for a few concrete signals: a clear no-logs policy that has been checked by an outside auditor, a company based in a jurisdiction with sane privacy laws, and ideally a track record where a real-world legal request proved there were no logs to hand over. Marketing language is cheap; independent audits and court records are not.

A blunt corollary: be very skeptical of free VPNs. Running a global server network costs real money. If you are not paying, the business often runs on your data — injecting ads, logging activity, or selling bandwidth. A free VPN can quietly become the exact threat you installed it to avoid.

So — do you need one?

If you land in a "yes" row, a reputable paid VPN with an audited no-logs policy is a reasonable few dollars a month. If you land mostly in the "rarely" and "no" rows, your money and attention are better spent on the things that actually stop the common threats: a password manager, two-factor authentication on your important accounts, keeping your devices updated, and a healthy suspicion of links in your inbox.

A VPN is a scalpel, not a shield. Used for the specific jobs it was built for — securing your connection on networks you do not trust and controlling where you appear online — it is genuinely worth having. Sold as total anonymity or all-purpose security, it is a comforting story that can leave you more exposed than before, precisely because you stopped worrying.

The next time that airport banner slides across your screen, you will know which half of it to believe. Protect the connection, yes. But keep protecting your judgment too — that is the part no subscription can cover for you.
